Before his death at the age of 39, Emilio Comici made more than 200 first ascents between 1930 and 1940. The climbing art of this Italian climber, known as the Angel of the Dolomites, was one of elegance, style, of strength and agility. It was then the strongest and best known of the Eastern Alps, the world center of climbing at that time.
David Smart recounts how Emilio Comici's tragic family history and growing up in working class Trieste under Austrian occupation shaped Emilio Comici's complex personality and approach to climbing. Like many Italian mountaineers of the time, although deeply anti-German and opposed to racial persecution, he was a devoted member of the Italian fascist party.'
